Someone's gone and remade the openings to key TMNT shows using Rise and aw, they're excellent! I like how you can see the editor's skill progressing with each video, as well as the sheer tonal variety in Rise itself, lol.

1) The warning bells have been ringing for a while on the possible collapse of FF.net in the near future, and they seem to be getting louder.

FicHub and FanFictionDownloader have been passed around as options for quietly saving anything you don't want to risk vanishing into the abyss. There are definitely a few I'll take pains to download as I'd genuinely grieve lose them (though I also hope no well-intentioned archivists start mass cross-posting other people's work to AO3 without permission since, oof, that seems messy). Typing it out by hand is... not going to happen, Tumblr user prismatic-bell, please put down the monk robes.

In the meantime, I suppose I need to decide whether to rescue any of my own works. There's always the option to just yeet them into the orphaned life - but I don't think the self-insert Bionicle fic is going to make it.

2) A collection of Goodreads reviews so scathing they obliterated the authors from their (admittedly misused) social media accounts makes for an interesting read if you don't mind watching murder happen in real time. Every insight I have into writer Twitter makes me even more determined to Lemony Snicket it harder than Lemony Snicket Snicketed it, in terms of having a public identity. Possibly it was just a mistake to link so many artistic egos into a hivemind like this.

3) Semi-relatedly, a friend recently sent me into a tailspin by revealing one of the main creative contributors to indie video game The Beginner's Game was a member of the same niche forum that formed the backbone of my early online experiences. Once I stopped laughing ("it's like the online version of 'hey, I went to the same school as that guy'! only more like hey, I was part of the same cult* as that guy?") I did an idle search around and found this old combo blog post and comic from the other main creator, Dave Wreden, in which he lays out in compelling honesty his experience with the strange weight of fame and success in the modern age. In particular this sentiment struck me: "Each new receipt of [praise] does little more than set the new standard of my own satisfaction." What an easy trap to fall into.

(*This is a joke.)

4) A video meme has been going around for a while featuring various slapstick moments set to A Hard Knock Life, and alas, it tickles my funny bone enormously. This Scream compilation was one of the first I saw and still leaves me chuckling, so you can imagine my delight when I found the TMNT guys are on it too: for both the 2003 and RotTMNT generations no less!

So apparently the Rise of the TMNT movie dropped and I didn't notice because I haven't been keeping my thumb on the fandom pulse lately, and Netflix somehow hasn't been spying on me closely enough to realise I needed that shoved in my algorithmic face immediately. For shame, Netflix. For shame.

Anyway that was a pretty solid Friday evening flick experience! Following on from the not especially acclaimed but moderately enjoyable cartoon series, the creatively titled Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie throws the gang into a frenetic battle to save the world when young protégé Casey Jones arrives in their timeline with a dire warning from a devastated future: the Krang are on their way.

Not my most productive ficathon, but I did manage two fills for some very beloved fandoms so that was nice c:

I was today years old when I found out the same animation studio is behind TMNT 2k3 and The Spectacular Spider-Man, making them responsible for both my favourite iterations of NY-based pop culture phenomena featuring quippy teenagers doing backflips and having an increasingly terrible time. A respectful tip of the hat to Dong Woo Animation - they have a real knack for fight choreography.

Relatedly I've been poking around what fanvid scene exists for 2k3, which unfortunately isn't much. I still found a few that really charmed me and made good use of the material:
(*By my calculations I first saw the show when it aired in the June-July school holidays of 2003, so for me the 18th anniversary is... right now! Apparently I was feeling the draw for a reason, aw.)

I believe the key to being a fan of the bloated mega-franchise that is the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is accepting that every iteration has its own brand of cringe, and you simply develop a natural immunity to your formative experience. I, personally, was inoculated via the '03 series, known for its serious and well-developed storyline, hokey 90s/00s aesthetics, and overuse of eye-rolling euphemisms like 'shell' because they couldn't let the turtles say 'fuck' even though they clearly wanted to.

Rise of the TMNT deserves credit for managing to grow on me despite having a very different vibe. The bright and dynamic animation from Flying Bark Productions was a huge part of the draw, but I ended up quite enjoying a number of the twists they took with the setting and origin, and even the bold reinventions of personalities and relationships had their perks (open affection between siblings and friends is always welcome). In the cycle of endless reboots, sometimes it's nice to try something new.

That said, the cringe was often pretty real, and I did not have immunity. At least 75% of the show is just unrestrained goofy nonsense, and that is a lot of meme-ified filler to wade through for someone accustomed to a series where you're harder pressed to find episodes that aren't part of a larger arc. The humour was a very mixed bag for me - I spent about as much time laughing in disbelief at how stupid something was as I did having a genuine chortle. The plot, when it emerged, could be interesting and even a tiny bit cool; attempts at being deep were feeble. Also, still not sure how to feel about Splinter's physical redesign. Choices... were made.

So I can't easily recommend the show in entirety. What I can do is recommend the thread of the main plot + some of the filler that made me smile to anyone who is in a similar boat. A boat named the S.S. I Enjoy Nostalgia, Familial Schmoop, And Animated Fight Choreography So Slick I Could Cry, But Boy That's A Lot Of Dabbing. It's roomy.
