Finally managed to get my hands on The Wire! I've been itching for some good TV to fill in the evenings, and while hour-long episodes are a bit hefty I'm enjoying myself very much. Managed the first five episodes this weekend in between chores and errands, and I can already see why it's held in such high regard.

• I don't want to turn into one of those people who like to regularly and smugly opine about how the youth of today would not be able to cope with x show or y movie from the good old days. That said. Kind of glad there was no Tumblr to discourse about this one.

• It is exactly the kind of show my mother hates (and my father loves). She can't stand it when there's nobody who's wholly likeable, nobody she can root for in full, good conscience. Me, I appreciate that no one's wholly dislikeable either! Even Prez got to be marginally less than useless one time! I'm less invested in the overall triumph of one side over another as I am the subtle back and forths of strategies and counters and backroom politics. Naturally, they've already referenced chess.

• Kima, Lester, and Bubs are my favourites so far. I'm taking bets with myself on how many of 'em are likely to survive.

• That this was a career-making role for Idris Elba is about the only thing I knew going in, so I'm also eagerly waiting for Stringer to take the spotlight at some point.

• "WHY is this guy's voice so damn familiar. ........ZAVALA?"

• McNulty and Bunk unravelling a crime scene and conversing in nothing but variations of "fuck" for a solid ten minutes was the funniest thing I've seen all week. The dialogue in this show is something else.

• It's slow but never boring? Fascinating.

• I was alive in 2002 and I still keep being taken aback by typewriters, payphones, corded phones. Found myself wondering how it could be so impossible to get a photo on a man when surely there'd be SOMETHING on the web or social media, and then had to have a light existential crisis for 15 minutes.

• McNulty might be an alcoholic cheater who sucks at tactically making nice with his ex, but I made an "awww :(" noise out loud when he was sadly lounging in the room he set up for his kids... Let Sad Man See Children.

• Still trying to figure out exactly what Dee's about in some ways. Dude gets real emotional about injustices and what he sees as needless violence for a bloke who supposedly murdered an unarmed woman in cold blood.

• They just did something to Omar's bf so I'm willing to bet there's about to be some gnarly shit going down soon u_u Overall I'm impressed that they don't seem reliant on Shock and Gore to maintain narrative tension. There's been, what, one on-screen shooting and a couple of tits so far?Pretty mild for HBO, lol.
