This is one of my favorites of all the things I've written. It's best if you read the original poem it's based on first:

I am wilded by the professional composition of this poem from the get-go! I am not familiar with the original, so it has taken me a little study to wrap my head around the exact conversation going on between the two pieces, but now that I have - I like how this reflects all the more upon the perspective that age brings, the placing of one's own woes and dramas in a greater, less self-absorbed tapestry. "But I am not so old as I once believed, nor so terrible / And the Universe ticks onward despite my scratching at its door."

I'm so glad you liked it! The original T. S. Eliot poem is one of my favorites, and I really wanted to do it justice--as well as the idea behind it, and the thought that it is possible to move forward even from such awkwardness as Proofrock suffers.

Oh I really like how much agency this grants to a character who otherwise has expressly none in the original narrative. The very first section, where the newborn Hel sees and feels that immediate kinship with the great machines, really sings.

Yaaay Ahimi 😊 I like how richly embedded she is into this narrative, this choice, this conflict. The complicated depth of her grief strung out across all the people she has been, and all the people she has loved and lost - the way she both judges and sympathises with Tekehu in her reflections, and her thoughts on Roke particularly. And this:

"We lost this place, she had told herself, trying to evoke that sense of connection – and the part of her soul that belonged to the Inquisitor had said We destroyed it."
