He soft-foots through the study, hands carefully clear of the shelves. Flotsam and jetsam. A whispering block of red stone; a tiny metal heart; a jar of lurid green. The creature inside holds his gaze a moment, then disdainfully turns inside out.
“What is it, boy?” the captain says, at their desk. “Is it still ‘boy’?”
Could, but doesn’t: how long gone this time?
Could, but doesn’t: you’d know if you were ever-
Does: “Da has dinner ready. Will you be down?”
The lamp is dim, making a shadow of the hunching shape bent over worn charts. “In a while.”

“Hush, little thief,” she breathes with the air drawn from his lungs. “Be still. Hold your tongue.”
Behind her the statue of the Blind Lady stands tall, hand to the blade sculpted at her hip. Moonlight had lit her face when he entered; now it lies in shadow, turned downward towards them.
“If you wish it kept.”

He knows the law and the lore. Guardians protect. Guardians prevent.
