She crooks her fingers against the candlelight, casting puppets for the giggling children. Here is a bunny: hop, hop. Then she draws an ear down into a crinkled snout, folds her thumb out, and the same hand shapes a new shadow. Here come the sharp teeth: run and hide.
The meeting is still going, low voices at the table quieting when trucks rumble overhead. The virus, they murmur. Not yet. Yes yet. Too great a cost to use. Too great a cost to not.
Which will they be remembered as in the end, she wonders: the rabbit, or the wolf?

He finds his engineer standing atop the engine, reaching out to run fingertips along the bolted seam of the ceiling.
“They replaced the panelling.”
“So?”
“Replaced the panelling, not the turbine that scarred it.” Taps the toe of her boot against her perch with a muffled metallic clang. “TS-22. Cheap. Good for a skiff, maybe, but a jackwhip? Courting fuel choke. Fuel chokes, fan slips. Fan slips…” She turns to him then, curling her fingers close then flicking them out, sharp and wide. Rattle-bang-boom.
He sighs, regretfully unsurprised. “Good price.”
“For a coffin?” Eyebrow arches. “Cloth and airlock comes free.”

Shin lies belly-flat among scrub and stone for twenty-six minutes, midday sun baking him into the earth. On the twenty-seventh, he puts three bullets through a Fallen Captain.
“Hell, Malphur,” the Guardian shouts, shading their eyes. Scarred metal draws seamlessly back together along their arm; dark stains sink through fabric to the flesh that spilled them, a river in reverse. “Is that where you’ve been this whole time?”
In the moment before Shin fired, the Guardian had been moving eagerly to meet the Captain’s sparking blades.
It is the moment he decides he will go alone.
