Reaction post for the last season of Infinity Train, because why not.
Episode 1: Apparently the garbled trailer dialogue was, "I'm Min-gi and that's Ryan." I've been faster endeared by other protagonists, and Kes (Kas? Kez? Cass?) isn't jumping out at me as a favourite denizen either, but the nature of the show is of course that we meet the characters at their worst and go from there. The "what? no we're totally fine" delivery was... oof. Sorry about your interpersonal drama, hope you guys get better soon, xoxo.
Episode 2: OH SNAP! A brisk summary of our two protagonists that's effective and engaging, capped with the early twist that this story is breaking the chronological progression - hello, young Amelia and a monotone One-One! Ugh, it's going to kill me forever that a full 8 seasons would probably involve an actual character arc for One-One and Amelia, but I'm still delighted to get this piece of it.
"Once these two arrive at their seat, it's up to them to sort things out." "And if they don't?" "Then they die here." The train is not a nice place. But apparently it used to give you snazzy uniforms, so there is that.
Ryan is ambitious and adventurous (and possibly a little starved for attention), and Ming-gi is cautious and strangled by the need to do the Proper Thing. Guess which one is earning my first kernels of affection.
Chicken Choice Judy sounds like a perfectly good band name to me :|
Episode 3: The Cat sure gets around. Am I complaining? No. Love that conniving feline.
Everyone is very fascinated by the dual passenger thing! Given we've never actually seen a normal passenger story it's a little funny.
How are there flies in a car full of giant talking bugs...
Ryan is definitely starved for attention.
Moral of our story to come: empathy, communication, putting yourself in the other's frame of mind?
Episode 4: IS MISSING... RIP. I'm sure that won't include any crucial information (it will have definitely included crucial information).
Episode 5: Well, whatever happened it looks like Min-gi's number went down further than Ryan's? Oh wait, no, they're back up to 202: mutual regression. They've learned that the purpose is to grow emotionally, though. I wonder if they're tied to each other - I assume so?
"If you do everything you're supposed to do, you'll eventually end up where you need to be." Oh, Min-gi. Mood but no.
Reckless Ryan and hypercritical Ming-gi, snarling their way to, uh, an improved friendship. Eventually. The moral puzzle of this car felt a little obvious, but still some good moments.
UHHH ONE-ONE (?) WHATCHOO DOING. Also, excuse me, "shouldn't lock until-" what, exactly? Modern One-One has done away with the shoes altogether, so I'm curious as to what the purpose was in the past.
Episode 6: Hmmmmm. So it was Amelia who started the trend of not putting passengers in the snazzy uniforms with creepy lock-down shoes! I'm getting the feeling that her going off the rails (ha ha) was not as unjustified as it initially seemed - the train used to be more hostile, and One-One a much colder overseer. It does sync up the disparity between current day One-One's chirpiness and the darker aesthetics of the train.
Aww, Ryan has been toting his Chicken Choice Judy shirt with him this whole time. Looking forward to that coming out at a poignant moment.
Different kind of aww, Kes is the Weird Friend among her fellow denizens :( At least the boys seem to already be on her side.
Minnnn, not again :( :( But at least they're talking about it this time.
POIGNANT SHIRT REVEAL.
Oh... at least part of Min's fear is their race / background will hold them back on the band scene. Infinity Train, pulling no punches.
Okay, that was a very cute conclusion.
Episode 7: Moooore arguiiiiing.
Oh. Well. It wouldn't be Infinity Train without at least one episode with some nightmare-worthy material!
HM THAT WAS A QUICK 202 TO 0. "I won't leave you" was the entire crux of Ryan's character development, really?
Oop, this isn't going well at all for you fellas, is it. Three episodes left to shout it out!
Episode 8: Feels a little like the "you left me there to die!" misunderstanding could be cleared up pretty quickly by telling the truth, which is that Ryan wasn't expecting to get through the door so quickly and then couldn't get back inside? But apparently we're not going to just do that.
Kes, are you from a haunted castle. Can't wait to find out what the deal with Morgan is.
Well we're talking about it at least a little! "And I know I should trust you, but the truth is... inside I don't. I'm just so tired of faking it." "I definitely wasn't trying to... you know... leave you." We're so not talking about the last car anymore. Anxiety and pressure and jealousy and low self-esteems all over the place. Love that hot sweet emotional Infinity Train catharsis.
I really appreciate that there are never any Obvious Gender Indicators for the various denizens. They all just look like whatever.
Boys. Boys you're forgetting someone. Boys.
BOYS YOU REMEMBERED.
Episode 9: Lmaaaaao Morgan is the entire castle. Nice switcheroo.
Not a very friendly castle either so... yeah, kinda, on the haunted part.
The whole passenger cycle is pretty hard on denizens, eh. Still no idea who created the train and I doubt we'll ever know now, but they did not put a lot of thought into the welfare of their sentient creations. Mind you, they didn't put a tonne of thought into the welfare of their passengers either, so there is that.
Callout post from Ryan for a floating talking bell - and he ain't entirely wrong. Of course, "you blow off all your wrongdoings" and "you never say sorry" are some pretty tight summaries for the lads as well. What a coincidence.
A million years later, confirmation, it's 'Kez'. Sorry for misspelling your name this whole time lil buddy.
Comfort the bell :')
Oh, sudden flickery chaos! Ten bucks a certain someone is staging her revolution - and yep, Amelia now has the wheel, however clumsily. Meanwhile, Ryan seems to be having a small breakdown. Roll on, final episode! Ever ;_;
Episode 10: "The train knew I was garbage." Aw bud. The train is pretty judgemental.
I have to admit this emotional journey has felt... like it has less of a flow than some of the other seasons? Like I am not entirely sure where Min's entire turnaround has come from, though I suppose he's had plenty of offscreen time to think about the big onscreen moments. The arguments have felt fairly circuitous and we haven't had the same kind of intensity at any point. Hm.
Now Min gets his exit but Ryan doesn't - and of course they're not leaving each other behind, no sir.
"So this like... ended kinda weird." Yeah it did a bit >>
Aw, and Infinity Train gets closed out with a song.
Overall: A solid season! Unfortunately, can't call it my favourite (insufficient One-One for that, and also just not as punchy as the first three) or a smooth final landing for the show in totality given they answered exactly zero of the hanging questions :( Ugh. Here's hoping they do find a way to tell more of the story someday, because I'm still REALLY KEEN, but for now... farewell to the train!
